Sometimes You don’t Need a Reason

I’ve been asked things like “why write Westbound Soul”. Especially at the beginning, when the site was more like an abandoned gas station crumbling beside some old West Texas highway than a bustling diner full of content and visitors. At times those questions have crept up and caused me to consider the purpose of this hobby. But I’m reminded that that’s just it. Westbound Soul is a hobby, something I enjoy doing, about topics that I’m interested in. If others happen to enjoy them too, well come on in. If not, oh well.

William Clark Green said something the other night during his show with Flatland Cavalry and John Baumann at Floore’s that stuck with me. I’d be willing to bet that he and his peers in the music business have struggled with the “what’s the reason” debate more than most since the grind to music it as a musician is a long and lonely road. At one point between songs, after the crowd gave him and the band another roar of approval, WCG said:

“We write our own songs for people who give a shit. It’s that simple.”

I can relate.
