My style of hunting requires gear and clothing to keep me in the field when the wind picks up, the rain starts falling, or the temps drop. Most of my whitetail hunts are from the ground in a bush, under a tree, or up in a tree. I push my gear to the limits for my area of Texas. If you’ve followed me on social media, you probably know how much I love SKRE. Before the 2018 season, I searched for new camouflage, specifically, a layering system, and came across SKRE. Making the purchase was one of the best gear decisions of my hunting life.
Gear for any situation
While most folks in Texas hunt out of a box blind where camouflage is not needed, SKRE garments still offer ways for you to stay cool on a hot, early season hunt or warm on a rare cold late-season sit. The Kaibab 150 Merino top is an amazing piece of clothing. The base layer is made from superfine Merino wool that naturally breathes and wicks sweat away while insulating simultaneously. The Kaibab 150 has completely changed my early season hunts. It’s weird to think about wearing wool when it’s hot, but due to the superfine spin, lightweight, and benefits of wool, I stay cool and scent-free (mostly) while withstanding the Texas heat. Another early-season garment from SKRE that would benefit hunters of all styles is the Uinta Early Season Pant. Just like the Hardscrabble Pant, the Uinta has dual side vents to let heat out quickly if needed. Made of two-way stretch polyester, the Uinta is super lightweight and water-resistant.
When the Texas weather finally gets cold, the Kaibab 300 Merino bottom and hoodie are essential insulation pieces. Paired with the Ptarmigan 850 Ultra Down jacket, these have been game-changers on the days where I don’t want to get out of bed because it’s so frigid. The heavier merino wool paired with the goose down absolutely destroys any wind and cold air from touching your skin. Simply put, if you want to stay warm when it’s cold, these are the pieces you need.
Here’s the thing about layering systems… clothing combinations work differently for every individual. You have to put in the time with different pairings. My favorite part about layering systems is figuring out how the products work best for me. I’ve added new pieces of SKRE to my kit each of the last three years, and my sits get easier and easier. If only SKRE would bring big bucks my way… SKRE provides high-quality gear at a fair price. Go get some.
