Part of the reason that cooking is going to be a big part of this blog is that I do a lot of it. I do as much of it as I can in or on cast iron. Cast iron spreads heat well, is durable, and is a very versatile cooking tool since it can handle literally any surface. I use mine everywhere from in the over, on the range top, over a fire, and even sitting clear in the middle of a pile of hot coals.
This one’s a little different, but sadly there’s nothing as badass as cooking in a bed of coals in this recipe.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 lb ground venison
1 medium onion (I use red, but it’s your preference)
1 small-medium bell pepper
4-5 small-medium golden potatoes (i used 5 and fed two people with plenty leftover)
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
5-6 slices of provolone cheese
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon ketchup
1-2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Several cups of vegetable oil for frying (amount depend on number of fries
Directions:
- Rinse potatoes under cold water and pat dry
- Slice into desired french fry length and width
- Dice red onion and bell pepper
- Place raw fries in cast iron dutch oven or large pot
- Fill with vegetable oil until all fries are covered
- Place pot with fries on burner set to high
- Once oil starts boiling set timer for 15 minutes, check at 12 minutes, fries may be done quickly dependent on quantity
- Do not stir fries until appx. 12 minute mark, otherwise they’ll just break
- If the fries are finished prior to meal time, place them on a paper towel lined baking sheet and place in the oven on warm
- Place a large cast iron skillet on burner set to medium.
- Add olive oil after burner gets hot. Rotate pan to cover thoroughly.
- Add ground venison and brown.
- Add salt and pepper to taste.
- After venison is brown, remove using a slotted spoon and set aside.
- Add vegetables to skillet and cook down. I added a little black pepper at this step. Just enough that you can smell it in the aroma.
- Once onions begin to turn translucent, add ground venison back into skillet to finish browning.
- Add ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.
- Add cheese shreds/slices on top of meat and veggie combo and allow to melt.
- After cheese starts to melt, mix it up. The addition of the ketchup, Worcestershire, and cheese should thicken things up a bit.
- Scoop onto a bun, add another slice of cheese, get yourself some fries, and enjoy.
